A Little Bit About Val Reid and Gill Marshall

I am Val and I was born in Hull. I am very proud of my home city, which is the UK City of Culture for 2017. Gill originates from Sheffield and moved to Hull in the 1970s and has remained here ever since—lucky girl.

I met Gill at a workshop in Hull and we became friends with a mutual interest in a variety of crafts but primarily patchwork, quilting and machine embroidery.

We are both passionate quilters and machine embroiderers with more than 25 years of experience. We also enjoy all levels of patchwork and embroidery from the simple to the more complex patterns.

How We Started

We formed our business in October 2013 as there were very few businesses in the Hull area that offered patchwork workshops. Our programme of workshops includes a few quirky projects. Being based in Hull, we decided to call our business Quirky Quilter Workshops Hull.

Our Core Business Value and Mission

Our core value is to help you unleash your creativity with new ideas and suggestions. We also aim to enhance your skills and help you design your own quilt.

To make that possible, we had to make our patchwork, quilting and machine embroidery workshops available, accessible, affordable and enjoyable for everyone, including us.

Helping You Create Unique Quilted and Embroidered Items

Whether you want to learn the basics of sewing, create more complex quilt designs or incorporate embroidered designs into your quilts, we are here to help. Our workshops are suitable for all even if you have never used a sewing or embroidery machine.

Accreditation

Big Lottery Fund

Aside from quilting and embroidery, we are also passionate about helping local charities. We provided services to a centre of homeless residents in Hull for their Rags to Riches Project and collaborated with JC Ready4Work LTD. These earned us accreditation from the Big Lottery Fund.

Our Charitable Activities

2013/2014 Children's Ward Hull Royal Infirmary

Christmas Stockings were made in the workshops and filled with toys, colouring books, and other items for children who had to spend Christmas in the children’s ward at Hull Royal Infirmary.

2015/2016 Hull & East Riding (HER) Breast Friends in East Riding of Yorkshire

HER Breast Friends is a registered charity dedicated to helping people with breast cancer. Our female workshop participants created and donated a quilt and accessories to the charity, which helped in raising valuable funds at their Gala Auction evening.

2016/2017 St. Andrew’s Children’s Hospice (Andy’s)

In association with Hobbycraft Hull, we have adopted a children’s hospice charity that supports St. Andrews Hospice in Grimsby. Once again, with massive support for the ladies in our workshops, we made Christmas stockings for sale in the Hobbycraft Store. We raised more than £250 for the charity.
